1. Our POPIA commitment
The Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013 (POPIA) governs how organisations in South Africa process personal information. SATUCC processes member information in line with the eight conditions for lawful processing set out in the Act.
2. Accountability and purpose
SATUCC is accountable as the responsible party for member and applicant information. Information is collected for defined union purposes — membership administration, subscription collection, representation and collective bargaining — and is not used for unrelated purposes.
3. Consent given during application
- Membership applicants confirm that the information supplied is true and correct.
- Applicants consent to SATUCC processing their information for membership administration and representation.
- Where a payroll deduction or stop order is authorised, that authorisation is recorded separately with the application.
- Consent can be withdrawn in writing, subject to the union's legal and constitutional record-keeping duties.
4. Minimality and accuracy
The union collects only the information needed for the purpose at hand. Members are responsible for keeping their contact and employment details current, and SATUCC provides a member update form for that purpose.
5. Security safeguards
- Role-based access: administrators, finance, content and reviewer roles each see only what their function requires.
- Member and application records are protected by database-level access rules.
- Case and disciplinary notes are restricted to officials handling the matter.
- Suspected data breaches are investigated and reported as required by POPIA.
6. Data subject participation
You may ask what information SATUCC holds about you, request a correction, or object to processing. Requests are handled by the union's membership administration.

7. Special personal information
Trade union membership is treated as special personal information under POPIA. SATUCC processes it only for the legitimate activities of the union and does not disclose the membership of any individual to third parties except where required by law or authorised by the member.
